Gig Story
Several years ago I was doing a church gig. It was a small orchestra with a volunteer chorus behind the ensemble. At the REHEARSAL, an elderly lady dropped her music right behind me. The music was easy and I knew I could stop and come right back in appropriately. So I stopped and helped by handing her the music she dropped on the floor. I then found my spot and continued playing.
The conductor was not pleased!! He stopped the rehearsal and yelled at me for missing those few measures. I told him I was handing a chorus member the music she had accidentally dropped. He was not assuaged and I was never hired back!!
The moral of the story – don’t be helpful, never miss a note, and be wary of gigs in River Forest, Illinois!
That is unreal. Lots of hubris going on there on the part of the conductor, I think.
The whole situation floored me as well. I couldn’t believe this guy! Helping someone IN A CHURCH? How horrible of me 🙂
Yes hubris. Very much hubris.
